Detailed Timeline and Checklist for the Class of 2011

1st Year

1st Week

Orientation, including presentation on 3rd year by Dean of the Medical School 
  

Fall

Students should visit the 3rd year website: to view study programs, mentors, key word indexes, thesis requirements, scholarships, and general information, including questions to ask prospective mentors and how to choose a research lab

  

January

"Thinking About the 3rd Year" -- info session

  
April/May
3rd Year Fair to explore 3rd year study programs and dual degrees with Study Program Directors
 

2nd Year

August-September

Gather information on scholarships and programs

Visit labs and mentors, and review literature in their fields

Talk with former students in those labs

Review 3rd year website
 
Begin to consider a tentative plan for 3rd year
  

November

Interview prospective mentors and labs; meet with advisory dean to discuss 3rd year

  

November onward

Students should be aware of various scholarship deadlines (most external scholarship deadlines in January or earlier and internal scholarships applications due April 1st--see scholarship link for more info)

 Advisory dean approval to study away due
 
 

March 1

Deadline for Study Away applications

Finalize lab & mentor/study program/dual degree decision

Registration for 3rd year

Deadline for registration form and proposal title
 

3rd Year

Mid August (during Assessment Week)

3rd Year Orientation

Arrange for 34 weeks of Practice Course

Completion of IRB modules (mandatory for all students)
 
 

September 30

IRB/IACUC approval to 3rd year coordinator (or documentation of submission, if pending)

IRB/IACUC Q&A sheet to 3rd year coordinator

Research proposal due

  

September-
May

Maintain weekly conferences with mentors

Participate in conferences with advisory deans every other month

Attend various courses recommended by some study programs

Attend as many research conferences as possible

  

January 15

Semester Research grade submitted for each student

Final deadline for MPH students' IRB/IACUC approvals

Registration for summer and fall of 4th year

10-month 3rd year ends

10-month theses due
 
Statistics requirement due for all students
