Dr. Bennett-Guerrero’s research focuses on the etiology of systemic inflammation in the perioperative period, in particular, the roles of the coagulation system, intravascular volume status, splanchnic perfusion, endotoxemia, and immunity to endotoxin. He is also interested in studying strategies that can improve the safety of blood transfusion, with a focus on factors that impact red blood cell deformability. His long-term objective is to develop strategies that can be used by clinicians to reduce complications in surgical patients and other high risk hospitalized patients. He is specifically interested in interventions that can reduce surgical site infections in high risk surgical patients.
