Research Interests:
My focus has been at the interface of clinical research within the practice of general internal medicine, measuring interventions to improve the burden of chronic illness.  I have assisted studies in many areas including depression, osteoarthritis, and vascular disease.

A special emphasis involves clinical informatics and the impact of emerging technologies on information.  In 2005 my EBM colleagues conducted a study of a PubMed (Medline) interface using a tool for a "problem-focused question."  In 2006 I was an author of a paper reviewing the use of information technology in infectious diseases.  Currently I am the PI for a telegenetics project sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  We are establishing telemedicine cancer genetic counseling in 4 rural cancer clinics in N.C.  In addition, in 2009 I joined the research team with Dr. Hayden Bosworth, an American Heart Association sponsored project to measure a tailored intervention using home monitoringand web-based technology, Microsoft HealthVault for patients who previously experienced a heart attack.

Medical students and residents work with me along several studies, for example, leveraging learning style and the usefulness of archiving lectures to iTunes.  Another is an evaluation study to learn features that best forward adoption of information technology by healthcare professionals.
