Research Interests:
My focus has been developing interventions to improve health behaviors and treatment adherence related to hypertension and other chronic diseases including coronary artery disease, and depression.  For the last seven years, I have been developing and implementing tailored patient interventions to improve patient blood pressure control as well as reduce the burden of other chronic diseases (e.g., osteoarthritis, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes).  I have published over 120 peer-reviewed articles that have examined the role of patient characteristics and social environment among coronary heart disease, stroke, and depressed patients.  I recently completed two hypertension self-management studies funded by the VA Health Services Research and Development – HSR&D and the Pfizer Health Communication Initiative.  I am currently the Principal Investigator on two federally  funded projects (VA Health Service Research and Development, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) focusingon examining various chronic disease self-management and treatment adherence interventions.  In addition, I am the Co-Principal Investigator of three federally-funded projects examining self-management in hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and osteoarthritis.  I am also currently  a recipient of the American Heart Association Established-Investigator award to further develop interdisciplinary relationships to improve patient self-management and treatment adherence with hypertension.
