Research Interests:
Since joining the faculty on July 1, 2000 I have enjoyed a rapidly enlarging clinical practice, which includes medical and surgical glaucoma management as well as evaluation of comprehensive ophthalmology patients. I have also continued several research projects that were begun during the previous year and submitted a K23 grant application entitled "The molecular basis of pseudoexfoliation syndrome." This grant should provide salary support and protected research time to allow me to develop into an independent investigator. Other active research projects include ocular drug delivery using long term drug implants, testing novel candidate drugs, and several clinical research projects. Regarding my didactic interests, I have been promoted to the position of residency director this year. My goals for the residency program are to provide the best learning environment for our trainees and provide them the tools to develop into the leaders of the future. I actively support their participation in and encourage them to formulate their own research projects. I am currently mentoring the following residents in their respective research projects: Jerry Hu, MD, Herb Greenman, MD, Dianna Miele, MD, and Jennifer Weizer, MD.
